But you are describing a three way switch and the other one was used to turn the light on or off which reversed the function of the one you usually use. To replace a reversing light switch disconnect the wiring and either unscrew the switch or if a locknut is used release this. If i turn on the light at one end of the hall then turn it off at the other end i cannot turn the light back on at the other end where the switch is already in the on position. If it is a single pole and not a decora style it should have on and off printed on it and would be impossible to reverse the function.
